A Necessity in the Clinical Setting

Phlebotomists, being involved in service-oriented responsibilities, must express and embody professionalism in all aspects (McCall and Cathee 10). Hence, it is important to reflect upon the meaning of professionalism based upon one’s understanding of the term. Personally, achieving professionalism begins by ensuring that a phlebotomist’s physical appearance is indeed appropriate for the task and it undeniably respectable.

To further explain, given that the phlebotomist works in the clinical setting wherein contamination is a potential concern which should be avoided, then cleanliness should always be maintained; a phlebotomist with rather unclean clothing would surely garner doubts from patients. Aside from the physical aspects of professionalism, attaining and embodying professionalism is also related to a phlebotomist’s behavior.

All actions taken should be done in a virtuous and reliable manner, always taking note of patients’ rights as well. Of course, given my understanding of professional behavior, I can properly claim that I currently exhibit professional behavior to an appreciable degree. For example, I maintain cleanliness in terms of appearance and formality as well as politeness in behavior. However, I do understand that there is still a lot to learn before I would be able to become a top-notch example in terms of professionalism.

Attaining further comprehension of issues regarding ethical considerations and patient rights, would allow me to practice professionalism in a more proactive manner. Therefore, learning to superbly act in a professional manner in the clinical setting may not be the simplest of pursuits, but for those involved in the practice of phlebotomy it is without doubt a vital one.
