The Definition of Home and What It Means to People

A Discussion of What Home Means We’re like turtles, who carry their homes on their backs. What does home mean to other people? Does home necessarily a safe and cozy place? What brings you security when you are at home? Can home be anywhere? In recent discussions of “what Is home” In the book Socrates should be a personal or social notion.

On the one hand, some argue that home Is a residential place where people feel safe and relax. From a personal perspective, people see home as a residential place where they can feel safe and relax. On the other hand, however, others argue that home should be a social place that belongs to everyone in the society. In other words, home is the beginning of societies and nation states: nation states and societies give people a great sense of belonging. According to this definition, home is not only a place where people originally come from, but also is the root of their race, ethnicity, culture and citizenship.

The relationship between personal home and social home is inseparable. The existence of personal homes is dependent on a well society. On the other hand, a well society is formed by groups of good personal homes. In fact, nation states are derived from societies, and societies are originated from personal homes. From my point of view, I believe that home should be both personal and social. Though I concede that the concept of home is more a personal place, I still agree that home plays an important role in society.

For example, if someone owns a home hysterically but he doesn’t accept his society or country, the place where the home is physically located may not be a real home to him. Some may object that even though they come from the country where they were originated, they never consider that place their home for other reasons. However, I think that their “homeland” should be the society where they believe their identity and spirituality belong to. The Issue is Important because everyone should have at least one home – a home where you can be your true self and where you believe you belong to.

Home Is not limited too hysterical house one lives, but it can be the country one belongs. Even a “homeless” person can have a home because they belong to their country. In this case, personal homes and social homes can co-exalts at the same time. Social homes cannot be formed without a strong bond of personal homes. And personal homes cannot be formed without a stable society. Hence, we can see the subtle relationship between personal and social home. Home, regardless It’s personal or social, Is a place where you believe that you belong to.

The emotional attachment of home is an essential element of forming a strong tie of personal home in a society. Connotatively, many people believe that home is a place where you feel safe and be Ovid. I agree that home should be a place where you can feel nice and comfortable because it makes the physical place you live more curable and relaxing, so that it will be more desirable to live in. In there words, to make it more home. Besides, she also insists on that home is actually a place where you possess. Home is your own place where it offers security and happiness, and you can have the freedom to do whatever you like. [Home] is a place where you can really be fully yourself and a place where you can get unconditional affection” (“What Is Home? “). Home is a place which does not belong to anyone else. The sense of belonging and security is an important impotent of making a good personal and social home. Moreover, your home is not bound by limitations. As long as we feel comfortable and confident with that environment, and we can truly be ourselves, that place or situation can possibly be our home. You can be at home when you are traveling; you an be at home when you are at school, at work, or at anywhere you feel the most comfortable. A home with family often implies that it’s a home with treasonable memories and unconditional affection, no matter sad or happy.

As if the discussion in Socrates Cafe© states that “[home] is a special place I care about more than any others” (Phillips 59). Because of the subtle bond you have with your family, we care about our family members. By losing our family members, we lose our treasonable memories. This explains no matter how frequently people move from one place to another, “whatever place [they] lived in as a home and not just a house” (Phillips 57). It is a place where they can line with their family.

As Kathy Thurber wrote in the quote at the beginning of the essay, she thinks that her family is like a turtle, which moves its home with its body to anyplace in the world. To her, she believes that home can be recreated wherever your family members gather. She cares about her family more than any others. It makes her feel home when she is with her family. She believes that no matter how their family is geographically separated, they still can recreate a true home wherever they reunite again. We can see that family has a crucial linkage with the concept of a true home.

Although I agree that family is an important ingredient in making a real home, I cannot completely accept the overall conclusion that a home is Just a place where your family members are. A personal home can be formed without a family. A personal home without family is another essential element of social home. Some may argue that not everybody has a full family or they don’t even have a family. Referring to the Socrates Cafe©, one of the participants says “l was raised in an orphanage. It wasn’t a pleasant experience, and I never consider it home.

After I left the orphanage, I lived by myself and relied only on myself” (Phillips 61). He points out that there is no such thing as family in his experience. For those who don’t have a family, can they still belong to a place called home? This man comes up with an answer. “l am my home” (Phillips 61). He believes his soul is his home. It is his body that he wants to rely on. In other words, home is not necessarily a place with a family. That is, a person can move away from his or her family and start a new home in a new place. Whether the new place is considered as home depends on how the person feels about the new place.

If you can be fully yourself, home can be any place with or without your family. And that’s one reason why, when the tribunal who prosecuted him gave him a choice of being exiled from Athens instead of being put to death, he refused.

A home can be a nation when we admit to the nation and consider that nation as our motherland. A nation state offers people an identity and nationality. If Socrates had gone out from Athens, he would have lost his identity and nationality which would have made him feel homeless. Indeed, home is the nation where you originally come from. Does your native land necessarily be your home? Here many immigrants would probably object this notion.

There are many people move away from their home country because of war, political issues, economics crisis and law. According to another participant in the Socrates Cafe©, she shows us how her roots are not a home for her. Was born and raised in Germany. It was my homeland, but it is in no way a home to me. ‘ [Phillips] relates that she and her family had to leave Germany to escape the horrific Nazi persecution of the Jews. Germany in no sense is or was my home” (Phillips 60). She states that although Germany is where her roots are, it does not necessarily be her home because the country has forbidden her.

The government of her home country tried to eliminate her race in the country. In this case, her social home may not be her native land, but I think she still has a social home that can give her security and comfort. That is, she should have a society that gives her a sense of belonging. Especially in America, the most multicultural country in the world, thousands of immigrants move into America to “plant their roots” every year. Although they are not native to this land, they can still define themselves as Americans because they found themselves fitting into this society.

In many cases, “home is the place where you feel protected and secure, and where you know that you ‘belong’ without having to question it” (“What Is Home”). Once you believe that you belong to one society, you realize your identity, and where your social home is. The social environment in America provides people the sense of freedom and security. They build their personal home here because of the ideal social environment. When the cycle continues, more and more personal homes are armed, and communities are developed. After all, the society gives people the sense of belonging and the concept of social home becomes mature.

A social home is important because it brings something more than a personal home to everyone in the world. He was frustrated about his identity. After his long Journey, he finally found his identity as an American, and America is his home even though he was born in Vietnam.

What he would do after he went home was to “be a better American” (Pam 341). In the very last sentence of his book, he had a conversation with a man on the plane. “This is America? ” the man asked. He replied miss, Brother, Welcome home” (Pam 342). He believes that he belongs to this society, he possesses “all [his] sweetest memories of America” (Pam 342). To him, America is his social home, the home that he believes his identity and soul belongs to. Once he loves this entry, he will develop his own personal home on this land. Therefore, we can see how a social environment is indeed an indivisible ingredient of making a personal home.

From all the arguments above, we learn that home can be one’s family and one’s country. As Meniscus, the great ancient Chinese Philosopher, says, the concept of home actually implies an interdependent relationship of individuals, family, states, and the foundation of human society (“Meniscus”). In other words, personal home creates societies and nation states, and society and nation state creates a social home. Meniscus elaborates this idea in the book Lila Part II. People have this common saying, ‘The kingdom, the State, the family. ‘ The root of the kingdom is in the State.

The root of the State is in the family. The root of the family is in the person [at] its head” (“The Works of Meniscus”). He stresses on the indivisible relationship between personal home and social home. An ideal country is an ideal place for people to build their own home. And an ideal home is built by people who believe the society is an ideal environment for them to “plant their roots. ” As a community grows, families are developed and the trend goes on. Eventually, a true home – a action state – is formed, a home that consists of a variety of societies and families.

When a nation state is built, the sense of belonging and identity is developed, the concept of social home becomes mature. Therefore, when the cycle persists in a positive way, a group of strong personal home will definitely become a concrete foundation of a harmonious nation state. To conclude, we can see the inseparable relationship between a personal home and a social home. A personal home is a “dwelling place together with the family or social unit that occupies it” (“Home”). It allows people to feel secure, comfortable, and free.
